Aside from photographing people, I sometimes turn my camera on more inanimate objects. On this most delicious occasion I had the pleasure of photographing some beautiful (and tasty) custom cakes for Sugar Lane Cake Shop.
Sugar Lane is a local Long Island business that specializes in custom cakes and sugar flowers for weddings and all other special occasions. They pride themselves on using only local, organic, farm fresh ingredients from Long Island's east end farms which really does come through in the finished product (I know from experience since I had an amazing pirate themed cake made for my daughter’s 4th birthday earlier this year). They utilize everything from homemade fresh berry purees and local Long Island honey, to cage-free organic eggs and can even offer the option of cakes being vegan and gluten free.
All of this makes for some truly incredible looking and tasting cakes but not to be overlooked are their awe inspiring handmade sugar flowers (see pics for proof) that adorn their cakes.
For the photo savvy readers… These shoots were done using my 90mm macro lens which enabled me to get some really nice and sharp details and get nice and close to those awesome sugar flowers. I lit the cakes with a couple of speedlights for the most part, one in an Apollo Orb octabox to the right of the frame and another in a small shoot through umbrella to the left for fill, I moved them around a bit for the shots from above as needed.
