Fire Island Lighthouse

I wanted to start 2015 off well with a little photo trip to Fire Island Lighthouse, a place I've always wanted to visit but have yet to reach.  I planned to make the trek on New Year’s morning but it didn't happen (blame it on the alarm clock, a comfy bed, or just pure laziness, I'm sure all played a part).  Anyways, I decided to try again on January 2nd and this time I was successful :-)  I left my house just after 5am to make sure I got there before the sun came up (since I knew there was a bit of a walk involved and I knew I’d want to explore a little to find some nice angles and compositions).  The day started off great, it was beautiful out aside from the cold weather and wind, and once I got out there it was so quiet and peaceful, just an awesome experience (I highly recommend that everyone go out and experience a sunrise at a beach every now and then, there’s just something so calming and therapeutic about it).

So on to the photos… On my walk towards the lighthouse I took the boardwalk, about half way I spotted this neat look out/viewing tower so of course I had to check it out.  Talk about a beautiful vantage point!  You could see the ocean to the right and the bay to the left with the lighthouse in clear view, it was great.  I took a few wide angle photos from up there and some with my telephoto, I liked the results but I knew I wanted to get closer before the sun came up so I didn’t stay up there long (also it was very exposed to the frigid wind which wasn’t very comfortable).

I made my way closer to the lighthouse and found the path down towards the ocean (good thing I brought my clothes lol).

I hung out on the beach a bit trying to take everything in and trying to get a few photos of the shore.

From the beach I had a great forward view of the lighthouse as the sun had peaked above the horizon to my right which illuminated things ever so well.  I really wish there were some more interesting clouds in the sky that morning but the bare sky was very pretty with its color gradients so I can’t complain too much.

Before heading up to get a closer look of the lighthouse I took a walk down towards the water to get a shot of the waves coming in.

I couldn’t believe how close I could get to the lighthouse, I was able to walk right up to it and touch it unlike Montauk Point where you need to pay a nice fee to get within 100 yards of it.

One last parting shot before I left.  I was at the museum building next to the lighthouse and climbed on a bench while perching my tripod precariously between the bench and fence supports to get this awesome wide angle view.

This was one of the last photos I shot before heading back to the car about 2 hours after I started (what a great morning).

All in all I had a great morning at the Fire Island Lighthouse, I can’t wait to go back again, maybe when it’s a bit warmer J Also, I plan on going a little later, maybe for sunset, so I can go to the top of the lighthouse.
